OCTOBER
"Hallowine"
An ancient celebration of Celtic origin, in recent times Halloween has become a popular event
in Italy too, where it now rivals Carnival. Nowhere is this more so than in the area around Lucca, probably because witches
have always felt at home in this part of the world. One age-old legend recounts the Witches Sabbath when they joined up with
devils to dance upon the Flowered Field above Bagni di Lucca. Another tells how they gathered under the great oak tree at
San Martino, still known to this day as “the witches’ oak tree.” On another occasion, they are said to have
met in the woods of the Pisa mountains, in the uplands of Coselli. In Italy, as elsewhere, traditions often give rise to celebrations,
and in Borgo a Mozzano, people paint themselves in dark colours, as part of a horror show that has now become the best known
throughout the province of Lucca.
COMICS AND GAMES FESTIVAL 2010 of Lucca boasts almost four hundred
exhibitors from all over the world, spread out over 18,000 square metres of covered area, large exhibitions mounted in important
buildings in the historic centre of Lucca, meetings and discussions, innumerable new publications, meeting with the many authors
who take part in the exhibition, more than 400 accredited journalists and more than 100,000 visitors - these are the current
statistics for LUCCA COMICS & GAMES, statistics that have made Lucca a must for cartoonists, game writers, publishers,
scholars, opinion leaders and fans.
